The recently closed edition of Milan Fashion Week is betting on denim. After including the recent exhibition “Voices of Denim”, involving Levi’s and AFA-Afro Fashion Association, the official calendar of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana has hosted Denim Diplomacy by Victor-Hart, its first womenswear collection presenting its vision of a contemporary wardrobe shaped between Ghana and Italy.
At the heart of the collection is denim, interpreted as a surface capable of carrying traces of labor, movement, time, and identity.
This universal fabric’s origins belong to workwear, street culture, music, and luxury, and, for this occasion, the Victor-Hart brand has reinterpreted it through upcycling, Italian craftsmanship, and a language rooted in Ghanaian cultural heritage.
By creating a complete total look made with old Levi’s jeans cut and rebuilt together into completely new apparel pieces, Denim Diplomacy emerges from the meeting of two perspectives. On one side, there is Ghana, with its memory, its sense of community, its own rhythm, and its strong tradition of using clothing as a form of identity and expression; on the other, there is Italy, with its tailoring tradition, expertise in construction, and attention to quality and finishing. That’s how Victor-Hart’s new language takes its shape.
Iconic workwear elements like, for instance, jackets, uniforms, utility garments, and functional details are reinterpreted through new proportions, silhouettes, and constructions, transforming each of them into a wardrobe with a contemporary, tailored sensibility.
Existing denim is dismantled, studied, and reconstructed along with different washes, weights, and traces of wear into a patchwork of elements that become an integral part of the design.
titching also becomes part of the narrative. On some garments, seams are deliberately left raw, exposed, and unfinished. The points of tension that make visible the meeting between different elements mix with new stitching, drawing new examples of how different cultures can meet together.
This is the idea behind the collection’s name, Denim Diplomacy, as denim can teach how people, cultures, materials, and different ways of creating can meet and create new ideas, projects, and products. Clothing becomes a space for encounter, bringing different identities together without erasing their DNA.
Denim Diplomacy was created thanks to the support and collaboration of the Embassy of Ghana in Rome with AFRO Fashion Association, Nixes Business, and Negri Firman, whose contributions have supported the development of the project and the creation of a dialogue between institutions, communities, and creative organizations, building a network of people, cultures, and expertise beyond geographical and creative borders.
