What would you do if you received a phone call inviting the band you play with to open Green Day’s New Year’s Eve concert in LA? You would immediately leave–even if your brother played a prank on you (and you don’t even suspect that).
This is the story behind “Nimroads”, a new movie dedicated the popular US rock band, that will hit worldwide theaters between 11 and 18 August, 2026.
Globally distributed by Trafalgar Releasing, and in Italy exclusively by Nexo Studios, this unique on-the-road “bildungs comedy” is inspired by the first years of the Green Day–featured too–as playing themselves.
The story constantly mixes the lives and passion of three friends living in the US of today willing to build their own band–the “Analog Dogs”–and craving to meet their favorite group on their way from Kansas City to LA. Along the road they have fun, quarrel, split, meet again, participate in music contests, fall in love, and take a nap in ghostly motels, to name a few episodes––according to a plot inspired by the first years of career of the Green Days before the release of their first success album–“Dookie”–in 1994.
The cast includes the band’s members themselves–Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt e Tré Cool–and stars like Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, Ryan Foust, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, Sean Gunn and Mckenna Grace.
To celebrate the announcement, the band shared the new song and video for “I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.,” now available on all digital platforms and on Green Day’s official YouTube channel. The soundtrack album, instead, consists of 30 tracks. It will be released on July 31 and includes 22 of Green Day fans’ favorite songs, along with exclusive soundtrack tracks, along with the new song “I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.” and four previously unreleased live recordings of the band’s performance at the Palladium in Los Angeles, as featured in the film. More tracks by The Paradox, Ultra Q, and McKenna Grace, as well as four tracks by the Analog Dogs, are there, too.
Written and directed by Lee Kirk, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and is produced by Tim Perell for Process, and the three Green Day artists.
“The film came about when Billie Joe Armstrong approached me about making a movie about Green Day,” says the director.
“We started brainstorming a possible plot and immediately agreed on one thing: it had to be inspired by the movies we grew up with—films like ‘The Breakfast Club’, ‘The Goonies’, ‘Footloose’, ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’, ‘A Crazy Day Off’, and others. I wanted to tell the story of the search for a life that didn’t conform to other people’s expectations,” adds Kirk.
“I wanted to celebrate music and the collective joy it can generate. I wanted to make a film that would speak to the different generations of Green Day fans, engaging both 15-year-olds and 55-year-olds alike. I wanted Green Day’s music to be present throughout the story, in surprising and entertaining ways. And, above all, I wanted to convey the nostalgia and love I feel for the movies of my teenage years,” he explains.
The film portrays today’s America, but populates it with objects from the past—such as an analog video camera, an old four-track cassette recorder, a yellow taxi from the ’80s, and other similar details.
Even the protagonists’ sense for style reflects a streetwear aesthetic blending the skater’s scene with workwear classics mixing oversized looks, chunky sneakers, and leather jackets ranging from Vans through Carhartt, to name a few—timeless and transversal as Green Days are.
Formed in 1986 in Berkeley, California, Green Day is one of the most successful bands of all time. They have released 14 studio albums, sold over 75 million records worldwide, and amassed more than 22 billion streams, in addition to making their mark on the history of contemporary music. They have won five Grammys and are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, after achieving international success in 1994 with “Dookie”, an album that sold over 10 million copies and earned Diamond certification (10 times Platinum).
